Droughtdamagedsilage

Drought Damaged Silage

Summer drought limits corn silage production by reducing ear size and stalk growth. Just four consecutive days of visible wilting during vegetative growth can reduce grain or forage yield by up to 5-10%. Yield losses of 40-50% are possible if high temperatures and limited rainfall coincide with silking and reproductive stages. Learn more about salvaging corn silage yield during drought conditions.

Assessing Frost Damage in Corn

Once early planted corn emerges, it is susceptible to frost injury. The stage of corn development when frost hits is key to the degree of crop damage.

Dow Seeds bm3 BMR High Forage Diet Advantage

A study published in the Journal of Dairy Science, February 2015, was completed at the University of Delaware to measure “The effect of hybrid type and dietary proportions of corn silage on the lactation performance of high producing dairy cows”. The hybrids in the study were Dow Seeds™ TMF2H699 (non-BMR hybrid – normal) and Dow Seeds F2F626 (bm3 BMR). Researchers studied the effects of a normal hybrid and a bm3 brown-midrib hybrid at the same feeding rate, and with another treatment of the bm3 BMR at a much higher level of inclusion.

Not all BMR Hybrids are Created Equal

It's important to understand the differences between brown midrib (BMR) corn hybrids. Did you know there are four different BMR gene variations? They are bm1, bm2, bm3 and bm4, and they are very different when it comes to corn silage performance.

Corn Leaf Disease implications on Silage Corn Harvest

Corn leaf diseases can have a great impact on yield of all corn, grain or silage. However, in silage corn, diseases can have an extra impact of reducing feed quality. Leaf diseases consume the parts of the leaf that the cow can digest, and leave behind the parts that are indigestible.

Dow Seeds bm3 BMR Beats Leafy-Floury

Researchers at the The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute in Chazy, NY have found Dow Seeds™ brand brown midrib-3 (bm3) BMR yielded 5.3 kg more solid-corrected milk (SCM) compared to a “leafy-floury” silage hybrid, in high producing dairy cattle. These results were presented at the 2014 American Dairy Science Association annual meeting.

Why Dow Seeds BMR?

Dow Seeds BMR (brown midrib) corn silage delivers maximum digestibility, greater dry matter intake and more milk! But not all BMR hybrids are created equal – All Dow Seeds BMR hybrids contain the bm3 gene, which delivers a 10-unit increase in NDF digestibility and an average of 2.2 kg more milk per cow per day. Less grain required = Reduced feed costs
